Before starting to talk about what to see in Riga on a weekend and what
what to visit in the capital of Latvia, we will learn a little about its
location in the Baltic States.
Tourism in Riga is far from being crushed, logically because of the
climate (atmospheric) and distance make this capital a distant and little-visited destination. However, Riga is one of the most underrated hidden cities in Europe.

Riga, capital of Latvia
Riga is the capital of Latvia and the largest city in the Baltic States (also
called the Baltic Republic). It, which dates back to 1201, is home to a third of the Latvian population. The historic center is famous for its Art Nouveau architecture and 19th-century wooden buildings. Furthermore, it is the European city with the most modernist buildings in the world.
A city that little by little is being discovered, little by little its fame attracts more tourists, because without a doubt, the capital of Latvia is a place you have to visit. In this article we will talk about this impressive city and the places to see in Riga.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city managed to become
rebuilding itself after the multiple wars that affected and destroyed it. Now, as time passes, he begins to appreciate the charms of a city where the oldest traditions coexist with the latest modernities.

gathering square
Not only in the capital of Latvia is the Town Hall Square, the most main center. This place, locally called Rātslaukums, is more than
six hundred years old. Its most famous building (apart from the city hall) is the Casa das Cabeças Negras.
It is a building built in 1334, which was the headquarters of a group of
unique traders called blackheads who met for
know the state of commerce in the area. The building belongs to what has been called late Baltic Gothic.
It was restored numerous times and, due to bombings during the Second World War, it had to be completely rebuilt. This happened in 1992 and was rebuilt keeping the original house completely. Even inside, you can still see the original foundations.
Inside, too, we can see photos and figures of former members of the house.
On some occasions, exhibitions and some concerts are held.

If you think about Riga, the first thing that comes to mind is this house.
It has become an icon of the city and the entire country. The most spectacular is the
facade of the building. It is necessary to pay attention mainly to the different reliefs dedicated to the guilds that belonged to the brotherhood.
Riga was practically destroyed in its entirety during the Second World War, and the buildings in the square were not very lucky. Today we find a reconstruction from 1999. A curious detail is the statue of Bremen City
Musicians, in honor of the Bishop of Riga (and originally of Bremen) Albrecht Von Buxthoeven.

Monument to freedom
The Freedom Monument is one of the highlights of the Latvian capital.
Built in 1935 and located in the center of the Bastejkalns park, which this
monument represents the freedom of the Republic of Latvia and honors
those who died during the War of Independence (1918).

Bastejkalns Park
This park is truly spectacular. It's not like any other park you might find in any other city.
Bastejkalns Park in Riga is huge and looks fantastic. Worth it
worth spending a few hours (a little less if it's very cold, which is very likely).

Latvian National Opera Building
Inside Bastejkalns Park we find the Latvian National Opera,
built in 1863 as a Riga theater for the Germans.

Riga Central Market
Riga's Central Market is one of the most impressive you will see
find on your travels, and probably a magical place to see in
Riga.
It was built from old zeppelin hangars that were used
by the Germans during the First World War. There are huge pavilions
specialized in the sale of basic products. More than 72,000 meters
squares.

St. Peter's Church
It's worth going to the bell tower of St. Peter's Church to see some
privileged views of the capital of Latvia.

At over 70m high, you will see the entire historic center and the Daugava River that divides Riga in two.
But this is not the highest place in the city. From the TV Tower you can see one of the most spectacular views you can imagine. There is a viewpoint at 97m from where you can see most of the Latvian capital.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, (like the entire city of Riga)
dates back to its construction in the 13th century, although from that moment there are no remains.
During World War II, artillery fire completely destroyed the church. But the Latvians did not give up and managed to rebuild it in 1991.
The interior of the church is not the most beautiful in the world, it is quite boring and simple.
But what's really worth it is climbing to the top of the tower. From the top, you can enjoy the best views of the entire city. 72 meters high to an elevator that at any moment could be the last trip you take.
An adventure to get to know in depth the tallest church in all of
city.

Riga Cathedral
Riga Cathedral is evangelical Lutheran, seat of the Archbishop. It's the biggest
medieval cathedral of the Baltic countries and famous for its weather vane. Date of
year 1211. Suffering numerous damages and repairs over the years. Incredible
its majestic organ, built between 1882 and 1883, with 116 voices and 6718
tubes.

The three brothers
The Três Irmãos are three contiguous buildings on Mazā Pils Street, which by the way is
very narrow. For those of you who have been to Stockholm.

Līvu Square
Līvu Square is the liveliest in the entire city of Riga. It is characterized by
its terraces and stalls, with many flowers.
