Greece is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and shares land borders with Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Modern Greece is influenced by Ancient Greece, which is the cradle of our entire Western civilization and where democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature, political science, etc. emerged.
With so many cultural elements, Greece is undoubtedly one of the most interesting countries for tourism.
In this text, we will highlight some of the most interesting tourist attractions to visit.
Attractions
Mykonos Island
Mykonos is an island that belongs to the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, and is known as “little Venice” and is highly recommended for those who love to party. The island’s beaches have bars that are full and lively with tourists and DJs playing loud music until the sun comes up.
In addition to the bars, there are activities to make the most of your vacation, such as watching the sunset in Little Venice, shopping on Matoyianni Street and eating seafood in local restaurants.
Olympia
It is a very important place in Greek history, being the origin of the ancient Olympic Games during the reign of Theodosius I. There you can find the Museum of the Ancient Olympic Games and the Museum of the Modern Olympic Games.
Any tourist who goes to Greece has to pass through Olympia.
Santorini
To get to Santorini you need to take a ferry, plane or boat. It is an island bathed by the Aegean Sea, and is the result of a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC. The Santorini Caldera volcano, which gave the island its current shape, is now extinct and has become a large hot spring.
In Santorini, you will find small white houses with blue roofs perched on cliffs by the sea in the towns of Fira and Oia. In these towns you can visit the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri, which is a Bronze Age archaeological site, the fishing village of Ammoudi, Red Beach, Kamari Beach, the Ruins of Ancient Thera, the shops of Fira, bars and taverns, etc.
Acropolis in Athens
The region where the Acropolis is located is the highest point in the city of Athens in Ancient Greece and was used as a military fort, a political meeting center and with sanctuaries built for the Greek gods. The Acropolis is home to the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and the arts.
The most interesting place to visit is the Acropolis Museum, which is a work of contemporary art, with an exhibition collection of the remains of the ancient Acropolis, with the history of its development and functioning in ancient times.
Crete in Greece
It is the largest and most inhabited island in Greece and, according to Greek mythology, is the birthplace of Zeus, the father of the gods.
In Crete, you can find the Cretaquarium Aquarium, which houses over 2,000 marine animals from 200 different species from the Mediterranean Sea. I recommend this tour for those who are on vacation with their family, as it can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
In the streets of Rethymnon we find beautiful buildings characteristic of the predominant architecture of the 16th century. They have the best restaurants and great shops for shopping.
The monastery was built in the 16th century and features the typical Renaissance style. It served as a refuge for Cretans and Venetians in 1866, when the Ottoman Turks invaded the island. The remains of some of these people are buried inside the monastery.
Knossos Palace is one of the most famous sites in Crete, being the one that tells the story of the Minotaur. It was first built in 1900 BC, but over time, it was torn down and rebuilt.
What to eat in Greece?
The Greek Salad
It is very simple to make, but it has the advantage of being made with the best ingredients. Typical ingredients that cannot be missed are tomatoes, cucumbers, olives and a large slice of feta cheese.
The gyros
This is the name of the famous original Greek barbecue served with pita bread. It is delicious, cheap and can be found anywhere in Greece. The meat is rotated vertically, being lamb, chicken or mixed with sauce, onion, lettuce, tomato and French fries.
Souvlaki
It is similar to gyros, but in a smaller version. This barbecue comes on a skewer that is served on a plate, and is also accompanied by pita bread, seasonings and French fries.
Greek yogurt
During your visit to Greece, you will have the opportunity to try real Greek yogurt. It is not only consumed as a dessert, but can also be used as a side dish for savory dishes and in various sauces.
Seafood
Seafood and fish from the Greek islands should not be missing from the menu of anyone traveling to Greece.
Moussaka
It can be found in almost every restaurant, but it is also commonly prepared at home during family gatherings. It resembles lasagna, except it does not have pasta, and is filled with meat cooked in tomato sauce, layered with eggplant and creamy bechamel sauce.
Saganaki
It is made up of just breaded feta cheese and can be included in the meze list.
Greek sweets
Typical Greek sweets have crispy dough covered with honey and filled with nuts, pistachios or other fruits, such as baklava, bougatsa, kantaifi, among others.
When to visit Greece?
The best time to have the most fun in Greece is in late spring and early autumn. This is the period when the temperatures are pleasant and there are fewer tourists, the prices for tickets are better and the temperatures are very pleasant. However, the beauty of Greece remains throughout the year.
