In Urupema, there are no cases of COVID-19. It is one of 295 municipalities in Santa Catarina, with no confirmed cases. Santa Catarina has already surpassed 1,000 deaths and more than 77,000 cases of this disease have been recorded. After 4 months since the start of this pandemic, none of the almost 2,500 inhabitants of Urupema have been diagnosed with the new Coronavirus.

There is a health inspection barrier in this region, which has been in operation since March. Everyone's temperature is measured as they enter the city and guidance is given on the use of masks, which are mandatory. As it is the coldest city, this may have contributed to a decrease in tourism during this pandemic. Urupema decided to close indefinitely

Other measures have also been taken, with public places in Urupema having to undergo disinfection on average every 20 days, with separation of people who have flu symptoms when being treated at the health unit in that city. Health professionals have already been tested and all tested negative.

Urupema is a city in the mountains of Santa Catarina and at this time of year it receives many tourists and several restrictive measures were adopted to prevent the spread of the new Coronavirus, which worked very well, as this city has not recorded any cases of this disease, according to the government of Santa Catarina, that in the state there are more than 5,600 records and many deaths.

Once this nightmare is over, this city will certainly return with its tourism and many people are waiting for a visit to this place. It is a small municipality in the Santa Catarina mountains and is 200 km away from Florianópolis. In recent years, Urupema began to gain great prominence in the national media, recording the lowest temperatures in Brazil.

It's no wonder this place is called the coldest city in our country. It is a region with few tourist attractions and therefore, one day is enough to see this entire place. There are around 2,500 inhabitants and it was founded in 1989 and is therefore considered a new city, as it was emancipated from São Joaquim.

Its main economic activity is agriculture and livestock. However, in recent times it is tourism that has been helping to boost the local economy. Its altitude is very high and is 1,425 meters above sea level, which can be influenced by its constant low temperatures, where it is even possible to find snow.

It is also a city that began to attract the attention of the media and tourists not long ago. This happened after the installation of a meteorological station at the Environmental Resources and Hydrometeorology Information Center of Santa Catarina, whose acronym is CIRAM, which 3 years ago began recording all meteorological frequencies and which are the lowest.

What to see in this city

There are two attractions that are basic in Urupema and that are intended for local tourism, which are Morro das Antenas and Cascata que freezes. The two are 7 km away, before reaching the center. For travelers coming from the municipality of Rio Rufino via Highway SC-439, along the riverbank, they should look for the signs that will indicate the way to the two attractions of this city.

At Morro das Antenas, visitors can climb 1 km on a dirt road in precarious conditions, so tourists can venture up this small road to visit the top of the hill, which is also known as Morro das Torres, being located a 1,750 meters high, being one of the highest points in southern Brazil.

The scenery is beautiful, which can make up for any difficulty in climbing this hill. After going down a small road, returning to an initial fork, it will be your turn to visit a waterfall that freezes and this time the car, if you go, should stay there, to go on foot to this waterfall, on a small descent that can measure around 200 meters. A place that leaves visitors amazed with so much beauty.

This waterfall that freezes is a small waterfall that is located at the foot of Morro das Antenas, which usually has its water frozen during the winter, which has very low temperatures, being divided into 2 levels, with the first of them seen when arriving via a dirt road and the second access via a small trail on the left side of the waterfall, which always freezes on the coldest days.

Its center is very small and has two main avenues. One of them is right when you arrive in Urupema and the other is close to City Hall, with a central square and a small church. For tourists who intend to travel to Urupema, know that there are few options for accommodation and food. It is a region where temperatures can reach minus 8.8ºC.

Waterfall that freezes – Urupema

A city with a harsh winter

As we mentioned previously, Urupema is a cold city. Its main attractions are also its rivers with clear waters, its green fields and its pine trees. During winter, snow can occur, with strong frosts, with its waterfalls and low vegetation turning into ice crystals, bringing an atmosphere of peace and tranquility to this city.

Its clean water springs and all its traditionalism are maintained by work in the countryside, with roping tournaments, many festivals and gaucho dances. Its nature is very preserved and with a cold landscape that delights the eyes of its tourists, who can freeze on the coldest days of winter, which can provide a great spectacle for anyone visiting this very cold place.
