Traveling to Greece

There is no way to say that Greece is not enchanting; its people, culture and history can only be described with superlative adjectives. The country is bathed by one of the most famous seas in Europe and Asia, full of symbolism and history, which only the Ionian, Mediterranean, Myrtleic and Aegean seas have to offer.
And they deliver fantastic islands, delivering a mix of natural beauty that is practically countless. But it is not only the islands that are exuberant, the continent is also indescribable, as it has the mountains of the Peloponnese, the rocks of Meteora and several other postcards that serve to further brighten the region.
You can find the remains of Pericles and see the height of Greek culture when visiting Athens; understand the origins of the Olympic Games by visiting the city of Olympia, be enchanted by the blue domes and wonderful landscapes of Santorini and, of course, visit the popular beaches of Mykonos.
It is still possible to find the footprints of this ancient civilization, which provide an architectural, philosophical and cultural heritage that cannot be measured or valued. If you want to learn a little about the history of Greece and humanity, you must visit Crete, the Minotaur, and Delos, the gods.
Greece is the birthplace of democracy, and this idea already existed in this place more than 3 or 4 thousand years ago and they already delivered one of the most wonderful mythology, which today leaves its tourists open-mouthed.
In addition to all this, we cannot forget that there is a highly regarded gastronomy, with each of the islands offering local cuisine, ranging from a classic horiatiki salad to incredible seafood dishes, drenched in olive oil and served with wine, mainly to pay homage to Bacchus.
Interesting itineraries for traveling to Greece
A good itinerary for Greece needs to combine a large number of destinations, mixing continental and island locations and even a trip to Turkey. Obviously, travelers can choose to go on a private tour, such as a cruise, but it is also a good idea to do a more independent itinerary.
For this non-stop itinerary, the ideal is to spend four nights in Athens, then one night in Olympia and two or three nights exploring the Meteora region. After finishing this area, the traveler can go to Delphi (stopping in Tabas) and then head to the island area of the trip, spending a week exploring Delos, Mykonos and Santorini.
For the islands part of your trip, it is interesting to opt for mini-cruises that vary from three to eight nights, to visit a large number of islands and take the opportunity to explore the Turkish coast, stopping in Ephesus and Kusadai.
How to get to Greece
Arriving in Greece can be a problem for Brazilian tourists, since there are no direct flights, requiring a connection in a European capital. Therefore, the options available to travelers are: Air France – with a connection in Paris; Alitalia – with a connection in Milan; British Airways – with a connection in London; Iberia – with a connection in Madrid; KLM – with a connection in Amsterdam; Swiss – with a connection in Zurich; and TAP – with a connection in Lisbon.
Athens International Airport, Elefetherios Venizelos, is located 27 kilometers from the city center, which is a great advantage since it has a metro station inside the airport. The ticket costs €6 and takes you to the port of Piraeus, located 11 kilometers from the center of Athens.
Taking the bus costs €3.20 and a taxi ride costs approximately €40. However, if you think that dishonest taxi drivers are exclusive to Brazil, you are mistaken, as some local drivers change the meter flag in the middle of the trip just to charge more for the trip.
Furthermore, it is still possible to get stuck in traffic, making your trip much more expensive, and among the possible options, choosing the subway is the most convenient way.
How to get around Greece
As already mentioned, one of the places that must be visited in Greece are its islands, so air transport is one of the most interesting options for those who want to visit the islands, but have little time – it is important to remember that the distance between the islands, in some cases, is quite long.
There are regional airlines that operate domestic flights between the mainland and the islands, such as Olympic Airlines, Aegean Airlines and Aegean Airlines. For those who want or enjoy driving, it is quite simple to rent a car to explore the country in this way.
The country has over a thousand islands, and there is a whole logistics system for the movement of boats, ships, ferries and hydrofoils (which are very fast boats). In this case, there are a large number of agencies, mainly in the ports, which show the timetables and prices for each of the sections, so that the traveler can also ask questions and get information about the cruises that pass through the different islands of the archipelago.
When to travel to Greece?
In reality, the Greek climate is less influenced by the period, but rather much more by its geography, that is, the climate is influenced by whether you are in a mountainous region, on the continent or on the islands – and thinking about the islands, the location also counts a lot.
But thinking about the climate in general, it is possible to say that the winter is quite mild and the summer is very hot and dry, with very high temperatures. Just to illustrate, summer in Athens can have temperatures that exceed 40 degrees.
The cold weather is quite harsh in the more mountainous regions or those further away from the sea, and it is quite common to have snow in the highest mountains, making it possible to practice winter sports.
July and August are considered the high season, as a large number of tourists come to Greece to enjoy the sun, heat and nightlife that can be found on its islands. As this is a busy time, the prices of accommodation, food and transport increase considerably, but the frequency of air and sea transport also increases, making it much easier to get around the islands.
However, for those who prefer a quieter place to enjoy their trip, the best period is from April to June or from September to October.
