Brazil is samba, beach… It’s Rio, it’s São Paulo and, of course, Salvador, but visiting
only the most common places make you miss other beauties of
country like Belo Horizonte of the city that you find in Minas Gerais.

What to see in Belo Horizonte
The capital of the state of Minas Gerais covers a large geographical area of 330
square kilometers and has many interesting points mainly,
grouped into three areas: Mangabeiras, Savassi/Central and Pampulha.
Rui Barbosa Square or Station Square
In the center of Belo Horizonte is located the old railway station, where
all the necessary materials arrived for the construction of the capital. Around
from the station, the square was built in 1904 and the first public clock in
city was installed in the station tower. The place is easily recognizable by the
careful architecture and the marble pedestal on which the
Monument to the Mining Land.

Américo Renne Giannetti Municipal Park
Halfway between the center and Savassi, there is the Municipal Park, a
immense green mass between the buildings of Belo Horizonte. Its projection was so
important that the park was opened before the city itself. Now, these
first stems turned into centuries-old trees, a refuge for more than
hundred types of birds and mammals. Inside the park is the Francisco Theater
Nunes, an orchid nursery and the Palácio das Artes, a huge space for events,
exhibitions, theater and cinema. Another work by Niemeyer.

Pope's Square
Israel Pinheiro Square is better known as Pope's Square, because it was there
that John Paul II paid a visit in 1980. The Pope was impressed by the
views and declared the phrase “Let’s go Belo Horizonte!”. It is a nice place to
walk and contemplate the city, 1,100 meters high. It is at the base of the
Serra do Curral, in the Mangabeiras neighborhood.

Mangabeiras Park
Without leaving Serra do Curral, Parque das Mangabeiras is the lungs of Belo Horizonte
Horizonte with its 337 green hectares. In 1982 the park was opened
municipal, work of the famous landscaper Burle Marx. The perimeter was closed to
protect more than 150 species of birds, mammals and endemic vegetation
who live there. It is also a good leisure space, to walk long distances
paths, with fountains, ponds, stages for events and children's areas and on the side

Closer to the city, another exceptional viewpoint is the Mirante do
Mangaba trees.
Freedom Square
The Savassi neighborhood is a vibrant neighborhood full of hotels, restaurants, bars and a
beautiful park: Praça da Liberdade. The square was built in 1903, it was a
of the main pillars of the state capital. In the center is the Palace of
Liberdade, which was the seat of the government of Minas Gerais and is now part of a
interesting tour of the surrounding buildings of the Circuito Cultural Praça da
Liberdade, each with a different architectural style: the Public Archive of
Mining, the State Public Library, the House of Culture, the Cultural Center
Banco de Brasil, the Popular Art Center, the Memorial of Minas Gerais, the
Mining Museum and the Mining and Metal Museum.

Museums of Belo Horizonte
Among the previous buildings there are two museums that are highly
recommended. They are very close to each other and are free:
Memorial Minas Gerais The most fun and educational museum in BH. There is
history and culture of the state of Minas Gerais, from prehistory to the
present. The investment of the mining giant Vale is noticeable in a
very large and modern museum, with abundant digital content, ranging
from mining, and economic importance, to festivals.
Mines and Metal Museum MM Gerdau is another of BH's must-see museums.
Over 18 rooms, it focuses more on mining and metallurgy,
emphasizing the connection between history and the economy of Minas Gerais. The
combination of building architecture with technology and the interior avant-garde is
surprising.

Pampulha
To the northwest, near the Pampulha neighborhood in the 1940s, was built
an artificial lake and an architectural space of reference for the whole of Brazil,
proposed by Oscar Niemeyer. Around the lake there is a perfect park
for sports and ecotourism, as well as works by renowned architects
Brazilians. Highlights include the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Museum of Art
Moderna and the House of Dance, three works by Niemeyer.

Gastronomy
In BH, the hearty tutú mineiro, made with beans and pork, stands out.
chicken in brown sauce and, to accompany, cheese bread and cachaça.
